Most Popular Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures

Let’s take a look at the most popular facial surgery procedures and what cosmetic trends the ASPS number may suggest.

Nose Job (Rhinoplasty)

The nose job is the most popular facial cosmetic surgery procedure, and has been so for several years. There were 213,780 nose reshaping surgeries performed in 2018. For the sake of comparison, there were 218,924 rhinoplasty procedures in 2017. This is a 2 percent decrease in the course of a year, but still solid numbers.

Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Cosmetic eyelid surgery is the second most popular facial plastic surgery procedure in 2018, which is consistent with its popularity in previous years. There were 206,529 eye lifts in 2018 compared to 209,571 in 2017. While this is a 1 percent decrease, it remains a great anti-aging option.

Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

The facelift is the third most popular options for surgical facial rejuvenation. In 2018, 121,531 facelifts were performed. This is down 3 percent from 2017’s total of 125,697 facelifts. We’ve noticed the decrease in facelift popularity at our Placentia and Orange practices over the years despite its reliable wrinkle reducing results. We’ll discuss why we think that’s happened below.

Neck Lift

The neck lift is the next most popular option for facial cosmetic surgery. There were 53,571 neck lifts in 2018, compared to 53,028 in 2017. This is a 1 percent increase in surgical procedures, and speaks to the nature of the procedure and its effectiveness in improving facial aesthetics while eliminating signs of advanced age.

Brow/Forehead Lift

Finally to round out the top five facial surgeries, we have the forehead lift. There were 38,795 brow lift procedures performed in 2018, which is down 3 percent from the 39,886 surgeries performed in 2017. This decrease is similar to the slight dip in facelift popularity, which brings us to an important topic in facial rejuvenation today: the rising popularity of non-surgical cosmic injections.

Trends: Facial Surgery vs. Cosmetic Injections

While anti-aging surgeries like the facelift and the forehead lift have being dipping in popularity, there has been an increased interest in cosmetic injectables. In 2018, there was a 3 percent increase in BOTOX® injections and 2 percent increase in dermal filler injections over 2017. These treatments offer temporary results with no scarring, no downtime, and at more affordable prices.

As people turn to cosmetic injectables for wrinkle reduction needs, we sense that certain facial surgery procedures will continue to dip in popularity with maintaining steady numbers. Facial surgeries like the neck lift, blepharoplasty, and rhinoplasty will remain popular since they achieve results that cosmetic injectables cannot.
