What is coronary angiography?

With coronary angiography method, the condition of the patient's arteries and the percentage of their stenosis can be so well-determined, that the doctor can choose the type of treatment for the patient’s condition with confidence. It is a cost reductive diagnostic way, which reduces complications after surgery. With this method, doctors can assure a shorter hospitalization for the problem. Angiography is not recommended for people who have an allergy to contrast agents, active infections, pregnancy, kidney and liver dysfunction, Refractory Arrhythmia and uncontrolled high blood pressure.

• People with narrowed coronary arteries. • People with hardened arteries around the heart. • People with coronary heart disease. • People with angina. • People who need a diagnosis before and after heart surgery. • Any patients with a problem of arteries that doctors will need an exact diagnosis test.

Angiography may sometimes be performed in an emergency, but if pre-planned, the medical team will ask for medical history and patient sensitivities. They do some special experiments. Your doctor will usually check for any heart problems before performing coronary angiography, using an MRI or CT scan. Angiography is an outpatient procedure. You will usually be asked to come to the hospital on the morning of the test and will be discharged on the same day, but it is best to ask for someone to bring you home after the procedure, as it is common to feel dizzy or light within the first 24 hours after coronary angiography. Anticoagulant drugs, such as warfarin, will be discontinued 2-3 hours before the test. Eight hours before angiography you should not eat or drink anything. At the hospital, you will be asked to wear hospital uniforms and sign a consent form. Nurses measure your blood pressure. If you have diabetes, your blood sugar will be checked too. You may also have to do blood tests and electrocardiograms. If you have used sildenafil (Viagra) in the past, if you are pregnant or if you are allergic to seafood or contrast dyes be sure to tell your doctor.
