Dental implants are surgical components that are used to replace damaged or missed teeth. They interface with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture and etc.

Damage or loss of teeth may result from a chronic bacterial infection in the tissues around the tooth (responsible for providing support to the tooth), first by creating a bacterial plaque on the teeth, and later by causing inflammation of the surrounding tissues. The implants are attached to the jaw and are used to create a strong foundation for the construction of an over-the-tooth structure by placing a crown, or another alternative tooth-building to reconstruct the oral cavity. Sometimes it is preferable to grow fixed teeth instead of other treatments for repair and reconstruction, such as a bridge or root canal treatment, which causes great discomfort to the patient and is not always successful. On the other hand, dental implant therapy is not an easy treatment, it is expensive, and causes a lot of pain and discomfort. The main advantage of the treatment is that it provides a permanent and good dental alternative for many years.
Most dental implants are performed only under local anesthesia, although they can also be performed under general anesthesia. In these cases, patients are asked to do not eat 8 to 12 hours before the surgery. Before implantation, the patient is required to perform a dental imaging examination, usually, a special image (panorama of the teeth) or even a computerized tomography (CT) scan is required to detect and diagnose dental conditions that cannot be seen through regular examination. In healthy people, there is no need to make special preparations. While people who are vulnerable to endocarditis, such as people with artificial valves, immunocompromised and others, must inform the dentist of their condition, to receive antibiotics before dental implants. People with blood clotting disorders are required to receive preoperative blood clotting treatments, as they are more likely to have bleeding. To minimize the infection risk, the dentist prescribes antibiotics which should be taken a few days before surgery. Also, to obtain the best cosmetic results, it is usually necessary to perform a series of preliminary tests, to create a building of a tooth with a color as similar as possible to the original teeth. In cases where the jawbone tissue is not suitable for accepting implants, pre-treatments must be done for several months before implanting teeth to create a suitable area in the tissue for receiving implantation.
