Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) or follicular isolation technique (FIT) is one of the two main methods of hair follicle harvesting in the hair transplant process. In this method, hair follicles are harvested individually from the back and sides of the scalp called the donor area.

Hair transplantation is the process of treating baldness or hair loss by replacing lost hair follicles. Different techniques of hair transplantation focus on the transfer of hair follicles from places that include a density of hair (such as the back of the head) to the places where the hair falls so that these follicles can grow and acquire the properties of hair in the region to which they were transferred. The most famous technique in this field is the Follicle Unit transfer technique (FUE). If a person has enough hair in the donor areas and the hair is thick enough, the FUE method is recommended because of its many benefits. One of the advantages of this method is that the scars are minimized so that one can easily trim their hair without worrying about the location of the surgical scars. FUE is an ideal and permanent way to treat advanced hair loss. This method is outpatient and safe. It is also possible to use body hair shafts (BHT) from other areas such as the beard, trunk, and extremities, which is suitable for people whose scalp does not have sufficient donor areas for hair transplantation. In addition, FUE is the best option for patients who develop baldness due to surgical wounds, trauma, burns, or alopecia caused by skin diseases.
Before taking any action, the doctor examines the patient's medical history to determine the main cause of the hair loss and whether the patient is suitable for an FUE hair transplant. It will then provide the patient with the necessary recommendations to increase the chances of successful hair transplant. Patients should stop smoking for 3-5 days before hair transplantation. Smoking affects blood flow and delays recovery time. They should also not drink alcohol for at least 3 days before FUE. Some medicines such as aspirin, Plavix, dabigatran, warfarin, rivaroxaban and any other anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or celecoxib should be avoided under the doctor’s supervision. Also, supplements such as ginkgo biloba, omega-3, fish oil, and vitamin B&E should be stopped because of the increased risk of bleeding during hair transplantation. Patients should wash their hair with regular shampoo before going to the clinic.
