Follicular unit transplant (FUT), also known as follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS), is one of the hair follicles obtaining methods. In FUT an entire strip of hair is removed from a “donor area” with full, thick hair and transplanted to the recipient site.

In FUT, the surgeon has a larger number of follicles for the transplant, which can result in a more natural appearance with the maximum number of transplanted hairs. This method is very useful when there is no suitable hair (in terms of texture or number) for transplantation with the FUE method. In the FUT method, the hair follicles are removed from behind the head and transplanted into the bald area. The result of this hair transplant is long-lasting and also the growth and appearance of the hair are like other areas. This procedure is non-invasive with the least amount of injury.
Before performing a FUT hair transplant, the doctor will review the patient's medical and drug history and try to find the cause of hair loss. Patients should stop smoking at least 3-5 days before hair transplant, as smoking can alter blood flow and delay the healing process of wounds. Drinking alcohol for 3 days before surgery is also prohibited. You should consult your doctor about taking medicines such as aspirin, Plavix and dabigatran or warfarin and rivaroxaban, and anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or celecoxib. Supplements such as Ginkgo Biloba, Omega 3, fish oil and vitamins B and E should not be taken before surgery, as they increase the risk of bleeding during hair transplantation. You should wash your head with regular shampoo in the morning of FUT hair transplantation.
