What is gastric plication surgery?


Nowadays the rate of obesity and its problems and illnesses is increasing, so the issue of weight loss has become more and more important. Although the best way to lose weight is to have a proper diet and exercise, sometimes the obesity problem is very serious, which is not easily resolvable, and other methods, such as surgery can be considered. Gastric plication is a relatively new, minimally invasive method for treating patients with obesity. It reduces the size of the stomach capacity to approximately three ounces.  Before the procedure

It is necessary for patients to feel free to ask all kinds of questions about the surgery process and the results. They should tell the doctor their medical history and allergies, also medicines and supplements intake. The surgeon may ask to stop some medicines such as blood thinning and painkillers like ibuprofen some weeks before the surgery. They should do some lab tests and physical exams. If a patient is a smoker, it is essential to stop it 4 to 6 weeks before the surgery and it is recommended to start a diet to reduce 5 to 10% of excess weight before surgery because it helps to lose weight faster after surgery.

During the procedure

The gastric plication surgery is done under general anesthesia and often is performed as a laparoscopic operation. the surgeon will make some incisions on abdomen to insert the camera and instruments. Then he or she will make one or two folds in stomach and as a result, the stomach volume decreases approximately 70%.

After the procedure

Patients feel pain after the anesthesia gone, so they need pain killers. In the first phase patient can only drink water, milk and natural juices, maximum 50 cc with 15 minute spacing. The second phase is removing any sugar and adding grains, legumes and starchy materials which are full of proteins and vitamins as in soup. Natural juices are changed to pureed fruits to make stomach familiar with hard foods. On the third phase which is the last phase before ordinary foods, instead of drinking milk and soup patient can eat yogurt and the contents of soup, also they can eat natural fruits. The last phase includes only limiting the food portions volume. They should prevent high calorie foods like carbohydrates and fats and change lifestyle and diet to vegetables, fruits and healthy foods. It is recommended to start jogging from the second month after surgery for at least an hour a day.
