The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of four main ligaments within the knee. It connects the tibia to the thigh bone (femur). The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is a ligament within the knee which connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone). The ligament can become damaged over time through repetitive strain or impact. However, many people suffer a single, serious event that results in the complete rupture of the ligament.
The surgeon takes a full medical history and examines the knee. Abnormal knee movement during these tests suggests a PCL or ACL injury. The surgeon asks for imaging tests include X-ray, MRI and bone scan. Patients should avoid eating solid foods eight hours before procedure. Smoking should be stopped few weeks before and after the surgery. Smoking will slow down the healing process. They should stop taking Aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines and herbal supplements before the surgery, since these medicines increase the risk of bleeding.
